Mathew Clements
Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo
Mathew Clements is an Acting Supervisor with Environmental Services – Solid Waste at the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, bringing more than 11 years of experience in municipal waste management and frontline public service.
Matt began his career working directly with residents at the Municipality’s Public Drop-Off and has grown into a leadership role while remaining closely connected to the day-to-day realities of solid waste operations. His experience spans waste diversion, recycling, public education, facility operations, and the challenges of delivering essential municipal services in a northern community.
Matt was part of the Solid Waste team during the 2016 Horse River wildfire, an event that forced the evacuation of more than 88,000 people and created unprecedented challenges for the community and its waste management system. His experience through the wildfire and the years of recovery, along with other environmental flooding events has given him a firsthand perspective on what resilience looks like beyond the emergency itself, from delivering services under extraordinary circumstances, restoring services, adapting operations, and carrying lessons learned into the future.
Matt has a natural ability to make complex information practical and relatable. Whether working with residents, education students on school tours, supporting employees, leading facility tours, or sharing the Municipality’s experiences with industry colleagues, he brings an approachable, people-focused perspective to solid waste management.
